Call Super stuns with a groove-led mix that draws from London's rich history

Joseph Seaton is an artist of visionary talent. He doesn’t so much push the boundaries of techno with his output, but rather understands the wide-ranging scope of the genre and works expertly within this, crafting broad-yet-intense music as Call Super.

The London-hailing selector was inducted into the city’s techno scene at the age of 14, sneaking into clubs and raves when possible, receiving an education in dark sounds within the bowels of the underground. These experiences likely had a shaping influence, but as he’s grown and developed as a music maker, he’s inversed this relationship, now standing as a leading light for all to look to as an example in how to approach producing.

Call Super started as two-man project in collaboration with Matt Waites with a couple of releases arriving across 2011 and 2012, but the following year Seaton went solo with the alias, and that’s when the singularity of his work really began to flourish.

His first solo release ‘The Present Tense’ arrived through fabric’s newly-founded Houndstooth label in 2013, featuring the mesmerising ‘Threshing Floor’ on the A-side that made a mark with its subtly powerful combination of doom-mongering bass strands and the sparse fragments of jittering noise permeating throughout. It set Houndstooth flying out the blocks, immediately asserting itself as a label to watch and providing the launch pad which has seen it become a big player in the UK scene, with artists such as Special Request and Marquis Hawkes now among its roster. Likewise, the undefined imprint gave Seaton the space to pursue his sound unrestricted by history or context.
