Mixmag and BUDX are heading to Lagos next from June 26 through 28 for three full days and nights of informative music panels, workshops and parties with local and global speakers and artists.

Day 1
Wednesday, June 26

Bridging the cultural gap between the Africas and the Caribbean

Ahead of his headlining performance on the first night of this unique Lagos experience, the innovative DJ-producer Jillionaire - a former affiliate of the American dancehall trio Major Lazer - will discuss the impact that afro house and reggaeton have made on the mainstream music industry. During the panel, Jillionaire will examine the evolution of this phenomenon and how he believes it will impact dance music moving forward.

The evolution of afrobeats in Nigeria

When exploring Nigerian music it’s impossible to miss the distinct sounds of afrobeat. Taking Fela Kuti’s uniquely Nigerian Afrobeat sound, the genre has been called upon as a source of inspiration for a multitude of genres, both electronic and otherwise. Here we’ll sit down with key figures of the genre today to explore its undying legacy and how artists are continuing to push the sound into the future.

Marathon DJ sets occur all over the world and extended sets are preferred by most ravers. World renowned DJs like The Martinez Brothers, Joseph Capriati, Ben Klock and Solomun regularly play for longer than 10 hours, but a Nigerian artist named DJ Obi took the idea of a marathon DJ set to new heights when he broke the World Record for the longest DJ set ever at 240-hours, a staggering 10 days. Now, he and his team team of loyal supporters will tell us the full story of how he fought sleep deprivation, hallucinations, hunger and fatigue to accomplish this astonishing DJ feat.

In recent years, viral dance videos have exploded in popularity and are leading the charge in shifting dancefloor dynamics in both Lagos and beyond. Here we link up with popular Nigerian hip hop artist Zlatan and the urban afro fusion dance company Westsyde Lifestyle NG - a group and movement that plays a key role in setting these trends. In addition to getting a full choreography demonstration from the troop, we explore why the connection between dance and music is a key part of Nigeria’s scene.
