10 Big Tunes you need to hear this month
The tunes you need to hear this month
1 Tuff City Kids feat Annie
'Labyrinth' (Club mix) (Permanent Vacation)
‘Labyrinth’ by Tuff City Kids (AKA Gerd Janson and Philip Lauer) with Norwegian synth-popper Annie is a wonky disco joy. If you loved Annie’s ‘Greatest Hit’ and dig electronic connoisseur Janson, this one’s for you.
2 Green Velvet
'Flash' (Eats Everything remix) (Cajual)
It’s been around for a while, but with DC10 DJs supporting it to the hilt, this searing new mix from Dan Eats is too big to ignore! Danny Tenaglia’s mix is the gold standard, but ‘Flash’ 2.016 isn’t far behind, with Curtis Jones (AKA Green Velvet) hammering the new version.
3 Black Coffee
'Buya' (Loco Dice Kliptown Love mix) (Get Physical)
Nice work, Dice: following that muscular Moby mix of ‘Go’, this haunting house rerub of Black Coffee sees him back in Big Tunes for two consecutive months. Make no mistake, this is sublime.
4 Telephones
'Sierra' (Running Back)
Inspired by house, disco and Balearica, Telephones is pressing all the right chords and (ring) tones right now. Just like José Padilla’s sublime album on International Feel last year, this is an LP of lush, atmospheric electronic goodness and ‘Sierra’ is the stately second track.
5 Bryan Ferry
One Night Stand (PBR Streetgang remix) (BMG/Vinyl Factory)
PBR were in Big Tunes last month with their best single to date, and now they’re back with this bassline-driven disco jam which has a subtle nod to The Day The Earth Stood Still: Klaatu, Barada, Nikto!
6 Jack Master
'Bang The Box' (Slam mix) (Basement Trax Vol 1)
Jack Master (two words) is one of the original alter-egos of Richie Hawtin. This heavy-duty Slam rework, meanwhile, makes it one for Cocoon and festival floors alike. Says Rich: “Slam’s updated take on the original uses the original voice sample (that’s actually mine)!”
7 Tiga
'Blondes Have More Fun' (Jonas Rathsman remix) (Turbo)
Eight minutes of tripped-out tech-funk that will undoubtedly be played by Pete Tong, Annie Mac et al, this may well end up being 2016’s answer to Four Tet’s mix of Eric Prydz.
8 Michael Mayer & Kölsch
'Germination' (!K7)
Following that amazing remix of Ambivalent’s ‘Whyou’, Michael Mayer returns with a new collaborative artist album featuring Roman Flügel, Gui Boratto and – YES! – Kölsch. This has ‘Space closing’ written all over it.
9 Yousef & Harry Romero
'I’m Behind You' (Alan Fitzpatrick remix) (Hottrax)
Yousef’s always been a big supporter of Harry ‘Choo Choo’ Romero, so it makes sense the two house-heads collaborate. Coming on like a future-facing tribute to early 90s piano house, Alan Fitzpatrick’s remix is pure Paradise fire!
10 Lee Burridge & Lost Desert
'Lingala' (All Day I Dream)
Though Lee used to be part of Tyrant with Sasha & Craig Richards and is a Burning Man favourite, the psychedelic ‘Lingala’ is his Big Tunes debut. With Âme & Dixon in support it could be the missing link between Black Coffee and Innervisions.
