Ten tunes you definitely need in your life this month
1 Tiger & Woods
'Boca' (T&W Records)
Ten minutes of unashamed disco-tech power, this percussive peak-time jam is one for Gerd Janson and Joy Orbison alike. ‘No More Talking’ is also excellent: both tracks here are pure dancefloor fire.
2 Kerrier District
'Techno Disco' (KiNK remix) (Hypercolour)
KiNK is on fire right now and this rolling, thundering, eight-minute remake totally deserves all the adulation that will be coming its way. But with Ricardo and Shed also on board, the whole EP is a must-hear. Happy 50th, Hypercolour!
3 Jonas Rathsman
'Cobalt' (Diynamic)
Jonas Rathsman continues his hot streak (remember ‘New Generation’ in November?) with his debut on Solomun’s Diynamic label. Powered by propulsive Moroder-ish synths with a breakdown that Pete Tong would be proud of, watch this one burn right through to Ibiza.
4 Butch
'Jack The System' (Tuskegee)
With a vocal inspired by ‘Jack Your Body’, the latest from techno production don Bülent Gürler AKA Butch is a masterclass of acidic afterhours power which goes straight for the jugular: Tuskegee remain on point.
5 Hawkes & Blake
'Flip A Coin' (Aus)
Regular readers will know that we’re big fans of Marquis Hawkes here, and the Kerri Chandler-esque ‘Flip A Coin’ (think Bar-A-Thym on Prozac if you will) sees Hawkes team up with Timothy Blake for this outstanding feel-good house instrumental with pianos set to stun.
6 Vimes
'Mind' (Tuff City Kids) (Need/Want)
Premiered on Mixmag.net, this nicely melodic and gently acidic remix is underpinned by the best 90s piano riff of the month. The production, however, couldn’t be more contemporary.
7 Lauer
'Birsk' (Futureboogie)
We want to know what Phillip Lauer is having for breakfast, as he seems to be generating a lot of amazing music at the moment. ‘Birsk’ is a brilliant no-messing instrumental with a buzzing b-line and synth interplay that can’t be beat this month. Nice work, Futureboogie!
8 Trevino
'Backtracking' (Schatrax remix) (The Nothing Special)
Schatrax was behind ‘Mispent Years’, one of the best techno records of all time, and his thundering new remix of Trevino’s classic has ‘4AM Fabric’ written all over it. Very worthy of a revival.
9 Ben Pearce
'Pomelo' (Moda Black)
It’s a very warm welcome back to Big Tunes for Ben Pearce with this Cocoon-shaped six-minute techno blooter, released on Jaymo & Andy George’s label, Moda Black. One listen to the melodic main riff and breakdown and you’ll be hooked.
10 Sisy Ey
'Do It Good' (Club mix) (Defected)
We can’t have a Big Tunes page without at least one proper vocal, and it’s the turn of Defected with ‘Do It Good’. Channelling the rave spirit of ’88 and ’89 in its synths, this is one for Annie Mac and Pete Tong. The new ‘Cure And The Cause’?
