Big Tunes: July '16
10 tracks you definitely need in your life this month
1 Lindstrom
'Closing Shot' (Smalltown Supersound)
We’re not going to lie, hearing new Nordic disco-tech is one of the reasons we get up in the morning. Intriguingly playlisted at 6 Music, this is the not-sosecret disco weapon of the summer and already up there with ‘Inspector Norse’ and ‘Strandbar’ by Todd Terje.
2 Todd Terje & The Olsens
'Firecracker' (Olsen)
Talking of Todd Terje, the man himself is also back with a bang on this quirky new release as Todd Terje & The Olsens. As ever, this quirky none-more Terje cut comes from a new package with excellent remixes.
3 Dusky feat Wiley
'Sort It Out Sharon' (17 Steps/Polydor/Astralwerks)
Techno and grime don’t always make beautiful bedfellows, but with this smart, space-invading new collab, Dusky and Wiley have knocked it out of the park.
4 Floating Points
'Kuiper' (Pluto)
It seems July is a good month for new music, and this new EP from Floating Points doesn’t disappoint. Like Ricardo’s ‘Fitzheuer Zieheuer’, it stretches the concept of a single to 18 minutes: wonderfully hypnotic, it doesn’t start running ’til it hits the 14 minute mark.
5 Felix da Housecat, Jamie Principle, Vince Lawrence aka The 312
'Touch Your Body' (Moodymann remix) (Crosstown Rebels)
Moodymann’s remix of The 312, on the revitalised Crosstown, takes the Chicago-influenced original and pushes the Moody power to the max.
6 Deadboy
'RU4ME' (Unknown To The Unknown)
Super-talented UK producer Deadboy follows up his stunning remix for ‘Diddy-Dirty Money’ vocalist Dawn Richard with this frenetic solo outing on DJ Haus’ ever-reliable Unknown To The Unknown label.
7 Paul Woolford
'Mother And Child' (Hotflush)
Supported by Pete Tong and Annie Mac alike, Paul Woolford’s return to the main room makes this his most compelling, dramatic release since ‘Untitled’.
8 Marcus Marr
'Rocketship' (DFA RECORDS)
DFA will definitely see their stock rise if they continue to release records like this, with even Zane Lowe supporting this quirky but brilliant single. Inspired by Prince and a love of early-90s Weatherall remixes, this just works.
9 Radio Slave
'Vision' (Marcel Dettmann remix) (Rekids)
Easily the biggest techno groove of the month (and premiered on Mixmag.net), this is the biggest remix for Matt Radio Slave since Dubfire ripped up ‘Grind House’ back in 2008; it’s custom-built for Berghain at 5AM, but suitably cosmic too.
10 Felix Dickinson
'Flip Flop Licker' (Cynic)
This groove-fuelled acidic disco instrumental conjures up visions of beach parties and early mornings, with a guitar lick that channels ‘Lucky Star’ by Superfunk (aka ‘Josephine’ by Chris Rea). We’re awarding this one weirdest track title of the month too.
