Free days out

Beach-Hopping

From San Antonio, head north along the rocks until you reach Cala Gracio and Cala Gracioneta. March on for 45 minutes to Punta Galera, where you'll find a weird formation of stone plateaus. The next point of call is Cala Salada (pictured above) – arguably the best beach on the island.

Dalt Vila and Ibiza Old Town (pictured below)

Feeling cultured? Head to the medieval fortress of Dalt Vila and explore the cobbled labyrinth of streets, chapels and courtyards. Check out the views of the harbour, then head back down to the chic Old Town for a spot of window shopping.

Sant Bartomeu Festival

This week-long festival, held in San Antonio in September, culminates with a huge tomato fight on the beach. You can buy handmade craft at the local market and there are sporting events out on the water.

Snorkelling

Jump on the No 4 bus from San Antonio to Cala Conta and explore the glorious turquoise waters and rocky coves with your trusty snorkel. Take a picnic for lunch and then watch the sunset at the famous Sunset Ashram beach bar.

AVOID: Handing over half your spending money to a travel rep for a program of rubbish, booze cruise-style excursions, half of which you won't be up in time for anyway.

Cheap Nights Out

The Sunset Strip A bar crawl along San Antonio's sunset strip doesn't have to expensive, especially if you're drinking beer and sangria. Start at the Golden Buddha before heading to Kanya. Then it's a five minute walk to Mint, Cafe Mambo and Cafe del Mar. End the evening at Savannah to watch the sun set.

Playa d'en Bossa Beach Bars Take on the Bossa beach bar challenge, starting off at Santos and walking along the sand to Bora Bora, Lips, Sir Rocco, Hard Rock Beach Bar, No Name, Beachouse, Nassau, Sands, and finally Coco Beach.

The S'Arenal Promenade

Cheaper than the sunset strip, a bar crawl along San Antonio's S'Arenal Promenade won't clean you out. Start at Orange Corner, dive into Ibiza Rocks Bar for their cocktail of the day, then stop off at Itaca for shots of hierbas, before chilling out at Tulp.

Pukka Up

Not only do Pukka Up throw the best boat parties on the planet, but your ticket also gets you entry to clubs from Ibiza Rocks to Sankeys to Amnesia, depending on the day of the event. Pukka Up on Fridays gets you a free Mixmag subscription, too.

AVOID: Paying full price for your tickets to the big nights. There is always a better deal (see end of feature).

Where To Eat

Sushiya Aoyama, Plaça de sa Drassaneta 13, Ibiza Town

Located in Ibiza's Old Town, just off the main tourist thoroughfares, Sushiya Aoyama is one of the island's best-kept secrets. Take a friend and share the assorted maki sushi, which includes spicy tuna, California and salmon mango, for just €19.

Can Terra, Carrer de Ignasi Wallis 14, Ibiza Town Order the most amazing croissants for breakfast, tapas for lunch and garlic prawns in the evening. The prices at Can Terra are locally pitched, which is why this modern café is always packed with price conscious natives.

IL Vaticano, Alemania, 5, San Antonio

From the outside II Vaticano looks expensive, but don't be put off by the grandeur of this stunning Italian restaurant where the food is out of this world. Expect to pay around €25 for a very special three course meal with wine and soft drinks.

Ibiza Rocks Diner, Ctra. de Platja d'en Bossa 294, Playa d'en Bossa Order the famous Ibiza Rocks Bar Chicken Pitta Special for just €9.95, including one side and a soft drink or a beer. Amazing value from a brand you can trust, and you're right next door to Space and Ushuaïa.

Chopstiqs, Calle Josep Lluis Sert 3, Playa d'En Bossa This Asian fusion wok-house serves traditional Indonesian, Japanese and Thai cuisine. Order the chicken terriyaki or the nasi goreng ayam curry for the ridiculously cheap price of €5.50 and then head to Sankeys.

beer or wine after dark.

How to save money on club tickets

Never, ever pay on the door at any of Ibiza's big clubs – you'll end up paying for it. Instead, keep an eye out for hustling PRs working the San Antonio promenade and the Playa d'En Bossa strip. They'll have loads of discount wristbands and they may even invite you in for free. It's also worth asking at your hotel – some of the fancier ones will actually put you on the guest list. For big nights there are often decent early bird offers: IbizaSpotlight.com, for example, offers €5–15 off door prices and queue-jump options. Also, before you arrive make sure you are following all your favourite DJs and island promoters on Twitter and Facebook, as free pop-up parties and exclusive afterparties are often announced on the day.

Your Mobile Phone

Most networks now offer European bolt-ons that will cut the cost of your phone usage while you're in Ibiza. Just make sure you tell your provider you're heading to the Balearics and not Spain, and remember to ask if you'll be charged to receive calls while you're in Ibiza.

Wi-Fi

Turn off your data roaming and use the free Wi-Fi available to guests and customers at most hotels, bars and cafes across the length and breadth of the island.

Cash and Cash Machines

The Pound is currently very strong against Euro, which means your money will go a lot further in Ibiza this summer than it has done at any time in the last five years. If you're changing money before you fly, do it before you get to the airport as they have the worst conversion rates– despite 0% commission. If you decide to use the cash machines in Ibiza you'll be asked if you want to withdraw your money in Pounds or Euros. Always withdraw in the local currency – in this case Euros – to avoid paying a slew of hidden fees.

AVOID: Paying for your club tickets, body paint and excursions in advance – Ibiza can get pretty crazy and it's likely your plans will change when you get to the island.
