1995 vs 2015: which is better?
We consult the archives to end the debate
The renaissance in 90s-style house and the anniversaries of some classic albums have unleashed a wave of nostalgia for 1995. But was it really better for dance music and club culture than today?
Fashion
1995
Girls: Gelled, spiky hair, shiny fabrics, fur, bootcut trousers, thigh-length boots and crop tops with slogans like 'Princess', 'Porn Star' or 'Cocaine' on them.
Boys: Idiots obligingly dress in kangol hats and checked shirts, making them easy to avoid. The 'Ricky from EastEnders' hair curtain is still a thing. White loafers. Beards not yet invented. Tattoos are rare and usually Celtic.
DJs: Tartan trousers paired with a cape-like jacket and oh god the hair on the likes of Darren Emerson please make it stop.
2015
Girls: Denim dungaree shorts, mesh tops, chokers
Boys: With their closely shaven sides, quiff and beard, many groups of male clubbers look like an 1840s cycling team from the neck up. Gym culture/creatine abuse means many others look like the 'muscle Marys' of yesteryear in their summer garb of scoop-neck, XXL vest and denim shorts. Tattoos are compulsory. Shufflers abound.
DJs: Black T-shirt and jeans for both sexes. Techno goth/ravens in knee-length black tees and super-skinny leggings, often paired with a cape-like jacket.
Winner: 2015. But only because no-one is wearing tartan trousers
