It's a soundtrack to a movie that sometimes helps crystalise the film into cult status. Without the music, some big screen flicks may not be regarded as they are now. Blade Runner and Trainspotting are two prime examples, the latter even getting a second soundtrack in 1997 because there were so many tunes that didn't make the cut on the amazing first one in '96.

Video games also come packed with accompanying music, TRON RUN/r being one with Giorgio Moroder and a host of Warp Records artists (Autechre, Plaid, Bibio, patten, Darkstar) in charge. In light of this, here's our rundown of 12 top-notch electronic music soundtracks and scores.

Tron: Legacy

If it wasn't for this Disney film, Giorgio Moroder wouldn't have had a video game to soundtrack. Released in 2010 and a sequel to 1982 film Tron, its main character Sam ends up in a cyberworld called Flynn's Arcade which has housed his father for 20 years. Who better to soundtrack over two hours of cyberactivity than dance music's original robots, Daft Punk? Guy-Man and Thomas Bangalter do what they do best for the OST, compiling a selection of dizzying tracks laced with synths and sizzling mechanics.

Blade Runner

A soundtrack primarily produced using a synth? Yes please. Greek composer Vangelis created a musical masterpiece for Ridley Scott's 1982 dystopian blockbuster, unsurprisingly influencing the development of electronic music. It had such an impact on Massive Attack, the Bristol group recreated the score with The Heritage Orchestra back in 2008. With Blade Runner 2 due to hit cinemas in 2018, sci-fi bods and synth connoisseurs will be wishing Vangelis returns to score more devious, at times delicate, compositions.
