We Are Your Friends bombs with box office opening of $1.8 million

It's the lowest grossing ever for a Hollywood film out in more than 2,000 US cinemas

Oh dear. Zac Efron's DJ flick We Are Your Friends has had a bit of a mare in cinemas.

We didn't exactly enjoy it, but it seems not that many people were even bothered to see it as its opening only grossed $1.8 million across 2,333 cinemas in the United States. In case you were wondering, that's the worst opening of all time for a Hollywood motion picture available in more than 2,000 cinemas, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

It's quite a blow for the Warner Bros. film, directed by Catfish filmmaker Max Joseph, as it was initially estimated to rake in around $8 million during the opening.

In response to the low grossing, Warner Bros.' executive vice president for domestic distribution, Jeff Goldstein, seemed to insinuate the film was never going to be a blockbuster.

"This was a passion project for Zac Efron, and we believe in him. Yes, the result was disappointing, but this was a small film."

It has been up against Straight Outta Compton, though, and it was never going to outdo that, was it?
