Watch Damian Lazarus go down The Road To Vermillion

New documentary follows the producer working on his latest album in Mexico

"That was pretty magical, wasn't it?" Damian Lazarus asks Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford, the co-producer of his latest album with The Ancient Moons, 'Message From The Other Side'.

They've just sat through and listened to the project as part of David Terranova-directed documentary The Road To Vermillion, capturing what happened when Lazarus invited a host of musicians to collaborate with him at a woodland retreat just outside of Mexico City.

Los Angeles singer Moses Sumney, who provided the vocals on album track 'Vermillion', and Mozambique-born artist Neco Novelas are two that joined him in the studio, while we get to see what happened when The Yucatan Symphony Orchestra played part of the record. Plus there's footage of Qawwali singers Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad, Egyptian musician Hossam Ramzy and jazz pianist Elew.

With James Ford describing the listening session as "intense", Lazarus jokingly suggests he should have made "something a little more popular".

No need for that, though. We still thought the Crosstown Rebels label boss is worthy enough to grace the cover of our December issue and play at Mixmag Live in Birmingham on November 21.
