Vienna removes entertainment tax from nightclubs
Another city that knows what's good
In the same week it was revealed Berghain was viewed as "high culture", all dance venues in Austrian capital city Vienna have been granted exemption from entertainment tax.
Come January 1, 2017, Vienna nightclubs will no longer have to pay 15 per cent tax on their ticket sales and entrance fees, meaning they'll fall under the same status as concert spaces.
Austrian publication Der Standard reports that €5.6 million worth of entertainment tax revenue was generated in 2015, but the Vienna city government now recognises clubs as cultural spaces.
Earlier this week, we reported how Berghain won a legal case to lower its taxation to seven per cent, even though tax officials argued it is “ruled by entertainment, not by culture”.
