Venues in New York permitted to open at full capacity

Andrew Cuomo, New York’s governor has announced that almost all public venues will be allowed to operate at full capacity without masks or social distancing, as long as those within can provide proof of vaccination.

Governor Cuomo said: "We're going to adopt the CDCs new guidance and regulations on masks and social distancing for vaccinated people. By the CDC guidance, immunocompromised people and vaccinated people should continue to wear a mask and social distance, but if you are vaccinated, you are safe. No masks, no social distancing."

Masks will still be required on public transport, and at places such as schools, homeless shelters, correctional facilities and nursing homes.

The Tribeca Film Festival, taking place on June 9 to June 20, at Radio City will open at full capacity as one of the first events taking place under the lifted restrictions.

Cuomo, speaking at Radio City Music hall, spoke of his excitement for full-capacity events: “This beautiful hall will be filled once again with what I am sure is going to be a phenomenal, phenomenal evening and attraction. Having Radio City back at a hundred percent without masks, with people enjoying New York and the New York arts, is going to be not only symbolic and metaphoric, but I think it’s going to go a long way towards bringing back this state overall.”

The ways that vaccination status will be determined are still mostly up in the air, as government's try and find a system that works for all. New York’s rumoured solution is the Excelsior Pass mobile app, which would allow for vaccination status to be obtained through the scanning of a QR code.

Around 45% of New York citizens have been vaccinated so far.
