'Beyond The Confines' (Fent Plates)

Fent Plates have been quietly going about their business since 2011, releasing records from artists like Asa, Sorrow and even Gantz, and latest eight-track, 2 x 12" compilation 'Beyond The Confines' proves what a good ear young label boss Zha has.

Moving away from the club, this is material that draws inspiration from a more impassioned, emotional place. Take Asa's lovely soundscape piece 'Franáoise (Pt 2)', Klatu's mesmeric 'Window Trinket' and the pain of Lil Sad's sullen, washed-out beats on 'So Afraid To Cry'; different sounds are explored, but each feed into an overriding sense of melancholy that binds one to another.

The subtle two-step rhythms of Occult's 'Early Grey' are also a highlight, as are the sickly-sweet vocals and shimmering, broken romance of Tusks' 'For You', but take it from us: we could easily spotlight the lot.
