Two major Birmingham nightclubs under police review, one more closed

Police have cracked down on three of Birmingham's major nightclubs due to "major violence", according to reports.

Gatecrasher on Broad Street had its license suspended after discussions with West Midlands Police but has re-opened as a result of meeting a set of conditions. These include cutting ties with its security firm that was apparently involved in an altercation on August 15 and promising the capacity will be halved for the first week of re-opening.

The Birmingham Mail also reports that The Rainbow Venues in Digbeth had its license stripped temporarily because of an undisclosed "incident" on August 9, but the club has posted on Facebook denying this.

"Just to clarify, The Rainbow Venues has NOT lost it's license as stipulated in the media. All of our venues are open this weekend as normal and we are celebrating one amazing bank holiday with Elrow and Portal presents Hot Creations!

"However, the authorities alongside our management thought it best to put in more robust procedures and policies regarding the exponential growth of The Rainbow Venues. We are far down the line to look up at the skies."

The third club is Electric, which has shut indefinitely, with the building's owners planning to find another use for it after two reported shootings and a stabbing in July.
