Here's how the DEA described 'Rave and Club Culture'
Useful information about "candy ravers" and glow sticks, according to the DEA
MuckRock, a US based organization which publishes publicly requested government documents, recently released the official 2001 DEA summary of 'The Rave and Club Culture/Designer Drugs'.
The report is as comical as it is alarming and sheds light on just how shallow the DEA's knowledge of club culture really was. As if the poorly written 'Rave Culture and History' and meager breakdown of music genres wasn't enough, the DEA goes on to cite their salient points about raver behavior.
Firstly, the report attempts to blandly define genres of dance music as follows.
Further standout notes from the report include notes on where to purchase glow sticks (gas stations near the Mojave Desert) due to ravers' "enhanced sense of sight" and the cringeworthy description of young "candy ravers" who prefer "fuzzy animal backpacks, Teletubbies and Winnie the Pooh, etc."
Old ravers, as the report nonchalantly points out, seem to be harmless "because there are so many old hippies".
The DEA gets into the nitty gritty with a proper definition of PLUR and finally, recommends the retail store 'Hot Topics' amongst others for rave paraphernalia.
Thank you to the DEA for its consideration and intensive research. It must have been wildly helpful!
