The Sprawl - 8/10

Rave013

Mumdance, Logos and Shapednoise have been playing out as The Sprawl, a kind of supergroup for those who relish grime as much as they do fractious electronics and, indeed, see parallels between the two. The trio have begun cutting tracks to wax, the first being this drop on the ever-necessary The Death Of Rave (check its last release, a journey through the laboratory-reared footwork of Rian Trenor).

Aesthetically, it's a warp of solitary low-end hums, piercing hi-hats deployed with expert precision and anti-gravity tangents that befit the 'weightless' micro-genre that Mumdance and Logos have opened up. Oh, and there's lots of space, dark chasms of it. Conceptually, the group's title is taken from William Gibson's Sprawl trilogy and also the name of the huge urban environment in which it's based. With titles like 'Drowning In Binary' and 'Haptic Feedback', the record evokes a very real feeling of a scificity being warped, slowly but surely.
