Techno culture in Zürich now considered part of UNESCO’s ‘intangible cultural heritage’

Celebrating the importance of dance music in the Swiss city

As part of Switzerland’s UNESCO standing, the city of Zürich has given thanks to its growing "techno culture", with a nod to its "intangible cultural heritage".

By joining the list of cultural significant traditions found within UNESCO member states, the city has recognised the importance of dance music within its community.

In conversation with Limmattaler Zeitung, Walter Leimgruber, a member of the persuading committee and a professor of cultural studies at the University of Basel, explained: “The development of techno culture in Zürich, with the Street Parade and a very distinctive club scene, lends Zürich a young, open, hedonistic and international reputation”.

Street Parade, launched in 1992, saw the likes of Carl Cox, Art Department, Loco Dice, Chris Liebing on the line-up in 2016, with Ellen Allien, Jamie Jones and Dubfire just some of the names confirmed for the August party this year.
