Technics reveals details of “standard model” SL-1200G

A more affordable edition?

Technics has unveiled a new edition of the SL-1200 turntable. A press release from Panasonic describes the forthcoming SL-1200GR as “a standard model inheriting the technology of the SL-1200G.”

One of 2016’s bright points was the return of the beloved Technics deck, although many fans baulked at the £2,999 price tag, with creative director Hiro Morishita explaining earlier this week that the turntable's target market has shifted towards the luxury end.

A more affordable edition was hinted at in February last year by Technics CTO Tetsuya Itani, and it seems likely that the new SL-1200GR is that model. Although price details have not currently been announced, at a weight of 11.2kg, the SL-1200GR is 6.8kg lighter than the SL-1200G.

The coreless direct drive motor and precise motor control, high-rigidity platter and high-sensitivity tonearm are among the newly developed features of the SL-1200GR, which will help the production of a clearer sound, reduce the impact of motor irregularities and enable more precise rotation reading.
