Sony Music acquires Ministry Of Sound Recordings
What does this mean for the future of the label?
Ministry Of Sound Recordings has been acquired by Sony Music Entertainment UK Ltd., essentially ending its run as one of the most popular independent labels in Europe.
The recent acquisition results in Sony now owning Ministry of Sound Recordings outright, which means it is in control of the label’s artists, back catalogue and compilations business.
"I'm delighted we have found the right home to grow Ministry Of Sound Recordings at a global level while keeping its unique identity,” said Lohan Presencer former CEO of the acquired label. “Sony Music is a world-class company that understands our ethos of exceptional curation and developing young talent”.
Since its inception in 1993, Ministry of Sound Recordings has enjoyed great success, but since the emergence of digital downloads and the music streaming industry it has had a difficult time staying on par with other platforms, specifically with the curation of compilations.
The Chairman and CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, Doug Morris said in a statement: "This agreement underscores our ongoing commitment to investing in great artistry and hit music. On behalf of the entire Sony Music family, I'm excited to welcome the wonderful artists and talented team at Ministry Of Sound Recordings to our line-up of world-class creative centres."
The Ministry Of Sound Recordings’ roster includes London Grammer, DJ Fresh, and Sigala.
