Snapped: Minimal Effort NYE 2016, Los Angeles

A night out with Recondite, Simian Mobile Disco, Stephan Bodzin and more

With no shortage of things to do and places to be on New Year's Eve night in Los Angeles, Minimal Effort's jam-packed rooms served as quite a statement about where the underground lies on the bustling city's attention span.

Headlined by Recondite, Simian Mobile Disco, Stephan Bodzin and supported by worthy peers like Amtrac, the Desert Hearts crew and Francesca Lombardo, Minimal Effort returned for its now annual NYE party at The Globe to ring in 2017.

Despite featuring more than a handful of live set ups with necessary changeovers - including Recondite's, Stephan Bodzin's, Audion's and Nicola Cruz's - the show's typically disruptive moments of silence instead served as anticipation builders, allowing the crowd a fleeting moment of rest before diving into another deep and immersive set from techno and house innovators.

Upstairs, the mood was lighter, but equally as danceable thanks to lighthearted soundtracks from newcomers like Sacha Robotti, who took over from Amtrac's set that flipped between house and disco tones.

The basement, however, dark and service-less, seemed to be the perfect place for the spirit of Minimal Effort to thrive. A late night, early morning set from Mikey Lion and Lee Reynolds of the Desert Hearts clan kept the energy high despite a demanding day out on the dance floor and with phones rendered useless, for just a moment, we all came together in celebration of a new beginning.
