Shark attack reported in Ibiza

A man needed hospital treatment after the attack off Playa d'en Bossa

An 82 year-old man has been injured in what is a suspected shark attack on a popular beach in Ibiza. The Spanish man suffered a two-inch wound from what was believed to be a blue shark, which are one of the most common shark species around the Mediterranean.

The attack happened on the famous beach at Playa d’en Bossa, home to megaclubs like Hï and Ushuaïa. After swimmers and sunseekers had cleared the water following the attack, a search was conducted but no sign of the shark could be found after a lengthy period.

Elsewhere in the Balearics an eight-foot blue shark managed to beach and then free itself within five minutes in Illetas, which is close to Magaluf, on Saturday. The area was monitored for several hours after the incident to make sure the shark did not reappear, before beachgoers were allowed back in the water.

Holidaymakers can rest easy, however, as a blue shark was captured safely on Sunday.
