Selects: Thugfucker

A playlist of deserving top tunes ahead of SXM Festival

Continuing Mixmag's Selects series, Greg Oreck and Holmar Filipsson come together as Thugfucker to deliver a playlist of their favorite selections ahead of their appearance at SXM Festival in St. Martin from March 15-19.

For those who don't know, Greg and Holmar did not stumble into their identity as well-known and respected DJs from the get go. Holmar, an Icelandic native, was once a "security expert" in his home country before moving to New York while Greg entertained a short-lived political career before discovering his true passion in the underground of the Big Apple.

Thugfucker was born in 2003 and since, the duo has become a mainstay on iconic rosters for DC10 to Output to Coachella to Fabric and more. Besides upholding their reputation as Thugfucker, both Greg and Holmar are also label heads in their own right. Greg co-heads Life and Death along with DJ Tennis while Holmar leads YAH! with James Healy and Pete Sung.

The pair are preparing for yet another big festival season, which kicks off sooner rather than later with the arrival of SXM Festival, a paradisal destination event that will showcase some of the best of the underground on the sunny beaches of St. Martin. Tune in to Thugfucker's playlist below and get ready.

Nina Simone 'Good Bait'

So much emotion in her piano playing. If this doesn't touch you in some way then you've probably burned out your serotonin receptors and should take a break from the extra curricular activities for a while... or you're a sociopath.

Low 'Over the Ocean'

Music to make love to on the sandy shores, or to cry to when your love has gone away. Either way, they've got you covered.

Amp 'Polemic'

This is the sound of English people getting high by the beach. At least that's what it sounds like to us.

Christopher Cross 'Sailing'

If you don't know this song already, then you're welcome. And shame on you!

Hailu Mergia 'Yegle Nesh'

Perhaps you didn't know that the Ethiopians are sexier than you and all the people you know. Sorry to break it to you.

Nils Frahm 'Durton'

The man, the legend - Nils Frahm.

KZA (Force of Nature) 'Transaction'

There's so much beautiful music that comes from Japan, we could make a mile long list and not even get close to covering the basics. Why just eat sushi when there's okonimiyaki too?

The Jackson Five 'Hum Along and Dance'

A classic you probably didn't even know about. "Ain't no words to this song, you just dance and hum along..." So good.

Space 'Carry On, Turn Me On' (AN2 Remix Edit)

Space disco from Space.

The B52's 'Give Me Back My Man' (Party Mix version)

"I'll give you fish, I'll give you candy, I'll give you everything I have in my hand..."

Psychedelic party music from deep in the American South.

Leonard Cohen 'Traveling Light'

The maestro has departed, but not without leaving us the most beautiful farewell. Without a doubt one of the best albums of 2016.
