Selects: Kevin Saunderson
A techno pioneer joins for this week's playlist
Each week, Mixmag invites the world's most revered artists to bring us an Apple Music playlist, hand-selected by them and curated especially for your listening pleasure. From Patrick Topping to Disclosure, the Selects series has seen a spectrum of tunes come through from major crate dig gems to the freshest tunes that are moving your favorite talents today.
Detroit's very own Kevin Saunderson arrives for a special edition of Selects tailored specifically ahead of Movement, where Kevin will be hosting the Origins showcase on Monday of the festival.
Alongside Juan Atkins and Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson was one of the first pioneers of techno. He's left a lasting impression on electronic music by bringing his undeniable production and DJ abilities as well as his properly Detroit-bred flavor to his memorable sets.
Appropriately so, Kevin has delivered an eight-track playlist inspired by the past, present, future and spirit of Detroit. See what stories and memories he's got to share below and don't miss Kevin Saunderson presents Origins: Elevation at the Made In Detroit stage on May 30 with MK, Guy Gerber, The Saunderson Brothers and more.

Cybotron - 'Alleys Of Your Mind'
One of the first electronic songs I ever heard that blew me away, by Juan Atkins. It was the beginning of techno.
Kevin Saunderson as E-Dancer - 'Foundation'
I took a hiatus and didn’t do E-Dancer for some years and I couldn't have asked for a better track to come back on. It captured the old and kept it moving forward and kept it fresh for the future. I still play it in my sets and people love it.
Terrence Parker - 'Alarm the Sound'
This is very raw, very Detroit and its just hot. Every crowd has danced and screamed to it.
BADS - 'HOUS-O-MATIK HOM-O-PATIK (Spencer Parker Remix)'
This track brings the energy to the crowd and boosts it. It just has something about it. It brings a great energy.
Greg Gow - 'Three Ways To Skin A Cat'
Even though Greg Gow is from Canada, he’s got it spot on. Great, great track.
Octave One - 'Blackwater feat. Ann Saunderson & Urban Soul Orchestra (Full Strings Vocal Mix)'
This is truly a classic. I love this version with the full strings, along with Ann Saunderson’s vocals and song she had written. It's a classic record with a unique song as well.
Zoo Brazil & Obsession - 'Pastil (Florian Meindl Remix)'
I love the piano on this track and love how the transition of the piano just keeps you hypnotically locked in. It's another track that I play and continue to play. It always works.
Mainline - 'Black Ivory'
This is a track that I go way back with, through to Paradise Garage days, New York days, everything. This was jamming. That band was jamming.
