Royalston - 7/10

People on the Ground

Med School, the experimental offshoot to d'n'b titan Hospital Records, covers a lot of ground, ranging from full ambient to rowdy tracks bordering on the industrial. But Australian producer Royalston's second album covers even more territory: this is dizzyingly varied within the junglist tempo, jumping from 80s electro vibes ('Blight Mamba') to trancey space voyages ('I Saw The Face Of The Person'), and from restrained and Autonomic-style minimalism

('The Depths') to fearsomely intense, even gothy, vocal tracks ('Don't Give Me Up'). Less switching between vocal and instrumental tunes might have showcased Royalston's exquisite production skills more coherently, but you can't fault his ambition.
