The Queensland State Government has denied it wants to breathalyse clubbers while they're in the club, but is pushing ahead with its plan for a statewide 1am lockout.
In the wake of last week's news, the Attorney General's office released a statement saying "there is no plan to random breath-test drinkers and there never has been". A government representative has since confirmed this to inthemix saying the Gold Coast Bulletin, who initially reported the news, was mistaken.
Under an already-standing law, clubbers displaying violent behaviour can be breath-tested by police and, if they are found to have a high blood-alcohol reading, that information can be used in court against licencees who continued to serve them alcohol when they were intoxicated.
The centrepiece of the government's plan to tackle alcohol-related violence, legislation calling for a 1am lockout and 3am cessation of service for all bars and clubs in Queensland, is expected to be introduced to parliament before the end of the year.
