Premiere: Walton's 'Taiko' is the perfect tool to shroud the club in darkness
A gloomy addition to the Kaizen catalogue
You should know all about the label Kaizen by now if you've been following Mixmag of late. Madam X's imprint made it into our Top 20 Record Labels Of 2016 thanks to a roaring fusion of grime, bass and techno from Biome and Silas & Snare.
Up next is Walton, a producer who's knocked out hypercolour grime productions ('All Night') on Hyperdub and grubby bass riddims ('Bulldoze') on Tectonic. His debut album 'Beyond' is a treat for anyone with a longing for vigourous low-end bass and scratchy, rough-edged textures.
His 'Taiko' EP slots perfectly into the Kaizen mould. It's murky and gloomy bass music prime for a dancefloor showering by Kaizen boss Madam X. She gave us an idea of how it rolls out in a set with her Impact mix last month.
Doom and gloom is the overall vibe on the title track, dominated by nasty bass groans and dangerous pan drums. It's irreparably moody and it's guaranteed to shroud a club in darkness.
