Premiere: Vaskular’s ‘187000’ is a woozy, percussive workout

Vaskular is a Chilean artist who makes hip hop-indebted house. In 2011 he co-founded the Discos Pegaos label with DJ Dementira through which he has put out a string of releases, both as Vaskular and Pablo Vasquez.

For his next outing Vaskular is returning to Cómeme, after contributing the spacey, Valesuchi-featuring ‘Black Jesus’ cut to the imprint’s 2014 ‘Gasoline’ compilation, with a four-track EP titled ‘Desastre’.

The producer built an 808-kick drum clone for the project, which underpins each track with an especially bassy percussive foundation, described by Cómeme as “probably one of the best bassdrums you will hear in 2017”.

B-side closer ‘187000’ was inspired by a 90’s hip hop track which repeated “187”, the code US police use for murder. It was initially built around a sample, but clearance issues led Vaskular recruiting his housemate Yula Kasp to record the vocal line, layering woozy synths and hard-hitting percussion beneath to create an infectious, idiosyncratic beat.
