Premiere: Somatic Responses shift gears with ‘Quktch’
Closing in on 100 releases and still sounding fresh
At last count, IDM and breakcore veterans John and Paul Healy had released 32 albums, and they show no signs of slowing down.
The brothers from the southwest of Wales have been pushing their industrial experiments since the mid-90s, appearing on a number of seminal labels like Dropbass Network and Lenny Dee’s New York-based imprint Industrial Strength.
Last year they released one full-length record, ‘Folding Space’, and two EPs, ‘Dark Faith’ and ‘Hectic’, all of which stayed true to the acid-laced, braindance sound.
Their first material of 2017 comes via Maelstrom and Louisahhh’s imprint RAAR and is one of the most adventurous releases on the young label. Drifting between raucous IDM, oddball electro and leftfield techno, 'RAAR005' has tunes for the home as well as the club.
At first ‘Quktch’ seems ready to spiral into a squelching distorted mess, but the crunchy drums are soon propped up by an elegant synth line that adds a delicate dimension to the track. Listen below.
