Police let an illegal rave go on for six hours

200 people were allowed to carry on partying in West Sussex

A rave in Burgess Hill, West Sussex on Saturday night was allowed to continue for six hours despite police being aware of it.

200 people were inside a building on Victoria Road when police were called at approximately 11.30pm, with 300 more trying to access the rave.

Instead of cutting of the party, officers blocked off the road and turned people away who were on their way there. Police eventually managed to shut off the rave at 5.30am on Sunday.

Sergeant Dave Morton Sussex Police said: "Although there are powers available to the police to close down illegal gatherings such as this, before exercising these powers an assessment has to be undertaken to determine whether or not such a gathering can be closed down safely and effectively.

"The assessment was that it would not be possible or safe to close the event in view of the time of night and the numbers of people arriving in the town to try and attend it."

No arrests were made.
