Om Unit's third album 'Self' is ready to drop

A dark exposition on psychological archetypes

Jim Coles has announced ‘Self’, his third album under the Om Unit moniker and the follow up to his ‘Inversion’ LP which came out on Metalheadz in 2014. ‘Self’ is Jim Coles' first album on his own Cosmic Bridge label.

The Bristol artist has produced under various monikers but Om Unit, the name which he releases warped, forward thinking drum ‘n’ bass under, has been his most enduring. Thematically, ‘Self’ was inspired by ideas of self-healing, and the vision of the self as an egg. Coles later realized this was a Jungian archetype, a psychological meme.

Musically, the album draws from dubwise, drum ‘n’ bass, bass music and ‘80s-style ambient soundscapes. As with much of Om Unit’s work, the presence of dystopian science fiction hangs heavy.

Manchester’s DRS, whom Coles calls “one of the realest lyricists in drum & bass,” features on ‘Make Believe’ while Amos from A/T/O/S lends her soulful tones to ‘What Can I Be’.
