UK has lost five nightclubs every week in 2024, report reveals

Figures from the NTIA show a dramatic decline in venue numbers in the first quarter of this year

The UK has lost five nightclubs "every week" in 2024 so far, a new report has revealed.

Figures from the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) show a "dramatic decline" in venue numbers, with 67 nightclubs shuttering the first quarter of 2024 — which averages to approximately five closures a week.

Of these 67 to close down, 48 have been independently run venues, which the organisation says, “represents a concerning trend” of a 40% decline in independent nightclubs over the last four years.

Some of the issues cited for such a drastic decline include the economic hangover from the COVID pandemic, a rise in disputes surrounding noise complaints, soaring bills and rent costs, and mounting debt.

NTIA CEO Michael Kill has, “expressed profound dismay over these figures, emphasising the cultural and social significance of nightclubs as integral components of the UK's nightlife.”

“Without immediate intervention and meaningful support from policymakers, we risk irreparable damage to our cultural heritage and the fabric of our communities," he continues.

The NTIA is calling for swift and decisive action” in the form of a VAT cut for nightclubs, to preserve the future of UK nightlife and “safeguard the future of the night-time economy."

Kill adds that “the Government must consider a VAT cut through fiscal intervention prior to the general election, businesses cannot wait!"

A recent proposal by music industry experts has suggested a £1 ticket levy at arenas and stadiums to support grassroots venues.
