New holiday tax for Ibiza to be put in place this summer
Other Balearic islands and Malta will also be affected
Those going to Ibiza from July 1 will have to pay a new 'Sustainable Tourist Tax', with the money going towards protection of resources on the island.
Implemented by the government of the Balearic Islands (so it'll cover Majorca and Menorca, too), the 'eco tax' is expected to add an extra £11 per week to trips for people aged 16 and over, with that sum to be paid upon arrival to accommodation.
Prices will vary depending on the type of accommodation booked, calculated at €2 per night for luxury hotels, but dropping to €0.50 per night for hostels or campsites.
Despite questions whether post-holiday payment charges are illegal, it's been pointed out that taxes charged by governments are exempt from the strict ruling on holiday companies.
Malta's another Mediterranean island to be affected, with over-18s expected to pay €0.50 per night from June, but mainland destinations in Spain won't be included.
