New Glasgow-based label Kin-Tu launches, shares full-throttle debut release

A new label has launched in Glasgow, Kin-Tu, this week (August 24) sharing its debut release from local artist NAMÄN.

'Romance' is a three-track EP spanning between raunchy house lyrics and 2002 Dutch hardcore, to acid-fuelled grooves and basslines to euphoric house-meets-trance energy.

The body of work follows his two self-released EPs 'Circling' and 'Expectation'.

“This EP is a reflection of the last seven years of development, capturing the essence of rave culture that’s shaped who I am and what I want to produce," NAMÄN tells Mixmag. "Glasgow’s queer scene in particular has been fundamental to me—it’s more than just incredible parties and great music; It’s a community where people passionately come together to create a space filled with joy, freedom, and connection. The sound is euphoric, raw, unfiltered, influenced directly by the intensity of early rave music. These tracks take deep inspiration from the chaotic spirit of weirdo warehouse parties at Lunacy and the fervent vibe of summer mother’s raves, and all the dancing and connection made throughout. This release is my celebration of the journey of curating sounds, motifs and experiences, ones I cherish deeply and wish to share with everybody.”

Kin-Tu as a label arm is a particularly personal affair for its founder Maveen of Kin-Tu, a Ugandan refugee now based in Glasgow. With 'Kin' symbolising the deep bonds of family and 'Tu' the act of connecting people - 'Kintu' itself drawn from the mythological figure Kintu, central to the creation myth of the Baganda people of Uganda - the imprint is set to embark on a mission to spotlight underappreciated artists based in Glasgow, both within and beyond electronic realms:

"Starting my own label wasn't a decision I made lightly; it’s the result of a four-year idea that took root and never let go," adds Maveen. "It began as a radio show and has since grown into something much larger. The label's mission is to spotlight the vibrant underground artists that Glasgow and Scotland have to offer. This passion for nurturing creativity drives my desire to establish Kin-Tu as a platform where diverse voices can thrive, innovation is celebrated, and the boundaries of musical expression are constantly pushed. Glasgow’s musical landscape is vast, and I hope for Kin-Tu to be mentioned alongside great labels in the scene, like 12th Isle, Numbers, Redstone Press, and Rebecca’s Records."
