New book explores life and legacy of DJ Screw

Next year, a new book on the late, great DJ Screw will be released.

Lance Scott Walker, an American rap historian and author, is due to release DJ Screw: A Life in Slow Revolution on April 19, 2022.

The book is being released by via The University of Texas Press.

More than 130 members of DJ Screw's family, friends, students, and others contributed to the book.

DJ Screw, actual name Robert Earl Davis Jr., was a pioneering figure in Houston's hip hop culture, releasing over 350 mixtapes and coining the "chopped and screwed" DJing method.

He passed away on November 16, 2000.

Walker follows Screw's rise from being "just a vinyl and cassette guy" to inventing the "chopped and screwed" mixing style and becoming one of Texas hip-most hop's significant cultural icons while weaving together a detailed narrative based on these conversations.

“I wanted to highlight the voices of the people who are around him and be somebody who’s just telling you the story around the campfire based on all the conversations he had,” Walker told Rolling Stone

As well as detailing the life of DJ Screw, this book also explores the history of the Houston scene as it came of age.
