Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ is no longer America's best-selling album of all-time
The new figure includes streaming statistics as well as sales
The King of Pop has been knocked off his throne, with 'Thriller' slipping down the pecking order in the America's best-selling album charts.
With over 38 million copies sold, The Eagles’ compilation titled ‘Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)’ has been declared the new best-selling album of all-time in the US. While the late Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ maintains its position as the best-selling album of all-time worldwide, the new data revealed that Stateside it was five million sales behind the new US number one.
Streaming statistics were included in the totals, with 1500 streams of an album or 10 song downloads equalling one sale.
The data was obtained from The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), whose findings also place The Eagles' 'Hotel California' in third spot. The 1976 LP is now 26 times platinum, making it the third best-selling album of all-time in the US.
The band’s Don Henley said “We are grateful for our families, our management, our crew, the people at radio and, most of all, the loyal fans who have stuck with us through the ups and downs of 46 years. It’s been quite a ride.”
