Miami's City Council may force Ultra Music Festival out from Bayfront Park
The iconic festival may be forced to move from its home grounds
Miami’s Ultra Music Festival is under threat of being forced out of its iconic Bayfront Park location in 2018.
The announcement comes after a new proposal from Miami’s city commissioner surfaced during a meeting on December 15. The proposed change comes after a petition was launched back in July to stop the city from throwing massive music events in the park.
The campaign aims to give the park back to the local community rather than have it designated as a “cash cow for the city”.
Since the start of 2017, the park has been closed to the public for over 100 days due to its state of disrepair. With Ultra’s contract up for renewal, the campaign argues that big events such as Ultra are “destroying the park’s environmental elements” and brings “alcohol/drug related violence” to the downtown area.
Ultra Music Festival has taken place at Bayfront Park since 1999, with a hiatus between 2006 and 2011 where the event was held at Bicentennial Park. Ultra has cemented its reputation as one of the world’s most iconic and original US electronic music festivals.
