Mark Farina in The Lab NYC
An intimate session of Mushroom Jazz
The Lab NYC is Mixmag and Smirnoff Sound Collective's weekly afterwork party where we stream the best American and international DJs from the intimate space connected to our Brooklyn office. This Saturday, Mushroom Jazz innovator Mark Farina stops by for a session of soulful grooves.
Hailing from Chicago, Mark Farina developed a reputation for fusing jazz, house, urban beats and downtempo styles to create his own brand of dance music. During the formative years of house in particular, Farina linked with fellow pioneers Derrick Carter and Chris Nazuka to form the Symbols & Instruments project, which is credited with releasing the first ambient house track titled ‘MOOD’. It wasn’t long before he decided to move to San Francisco, where he would play an integral role in developing the underground scene with his weekly Mushroom Jazz club night.
As Mushroom Jazz took off and earned a cult-like following, OM Records released the first compilation of the same name. Now eight volumes later and it’s clear Farina’s tastemaker status is unparalleled. His original material also stands out, with releases on OM Records, Robsoul, Moulton Music and his very own Great Lakes Audio. Today you know where to find him, in his studio relentlessly banging out beats.
Immediately following the Lab NYC, Mark Farina headlines House of Yes for their post Mermaid Parade celebration. Grab tickets here.
