Major Lazer becomes the first major US dance music act to play Cuba

The group is making history in the Caribbean

For the first time, Major Lazer is headed to Cuba in March to play a free show in Havana. But besides achieving a new global milestone for themselves, the group is pioneering for all major US music acts as the first major performer to play in the Caribbean island since the US reinstated diplomatic relations in 2014.

"For as long as I can remember, Cuba has played an influential role on my love of music—Cuba has such a powerful cultural impact all over the world and for me, especially growing up in Florida, it became one of the biggest cultural centers for music to evolve from," Diplo said.

It makes perfect sense that Diplo, Walshy Fire and Jillionaire will spearhead Cuba's first introduction to pop music and live shows. Major Lazer has always had strong roots within dancehall and reggae, a proud output from the Caribbean region as a whole.

The free show is presented by the Musicabana Foundation in association with the Cuban government and will take place on March 6 at Tribuna José Martí.
