London Mayor responds to Fabric crisis

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has officially responded to growing public concern for the city's nightlife, specifically about the possible closure of Fabric, the popular nightclub that has been closed as its license undergoes review following two drug-related teenage deaths.

Yesterday it was announced that the city would review the venue's license "within the next 28 days", but rumors of Fabric's potential closure has prompted many respected artists within the dance music community to express their concern. They took to social media with the hashtag #SAVEFABRIC in order to create awareness for Mayor Khan to address the issue.

In a response to Artwork's tweet, Mayor Khan wrote: "I'm urging #Fabric, the Met & Islington to find an approach that protects clubbers' safety & the future of the club."

A spokesperson from the mayor's office released a statement to Mixmag that discussed how "London’s night clubs and music venues are the lifeblood of the city’s international music scene" and expressed that "young culture is one of the Mayor’s core priorities."

The statement went on to express that "more work needs to be done to ensure that the night time economy can thrive without compromising the safety of Londoners and visitors to the capital."

In order to make sure this ongoing issue is properly handled, the statement revealed that "a Night Czar" would be appointed "who will do vital work with venues, authorities, developers, and punters to ensure London thrives as a 24-hour-city."
