LGBTQ activist and DJ Bubbles shot and killed in San Francisco
"This is a hate crime"
Anthony Torres, a beloved LGBTQ activist and DJ also known as Bubbles, was shot and killed outside a San Francisco club in what his attorney is calling a hate crime.
The shooting took place at 3AM on Sunday morning just outside the New Century strip club. Word quickly spread of the homicide and an outpouring of friends came to the scene to pay tribute with photos, flowers, candles and a sign that read “Rest in Power Bubbles”. The area is historically known to be a safe place for members of the LGBTQ community.
Attorney Jim Reilly, who represented Torres previously, spoke out on the tragedy: “This is a hate crime… For a transgender activist to be gunned down on his own street shouldn’t stand and won’t stand.”
No suspect information has been released, but Supervisor Jane Kim said police have surveillance footage and a suspect of interest. That said, police revealed they do not have enough information to officially label the homicide as a hate crime.
The label head of Dark Entries, Josh Cheon, posted a message about Bubbles on Facebook, touching on how unique of an individual she was and how she impacted the community.
“If you were lucky enough to meet Bubbles you would never forget her, a true artist in every meaning of the word. Not of this time or planet she was always full of the most positive energy she would excitedly share stories about launching a new fashion line, discovering a Severed Heads b-side and throwing a party in an underground space all in the same conversation. San Francisco lost one of the best and will never be the same."
