Len Leise - 7/10

Lingua Franca

A bit of mystique rarely does anyone harm in the world of electronic music.

International Feel's head boy, Mark Barrott, discovered Len Leise after digging in the crates at a Paris record shop, and eventually tracked him down to Australia (or so the story goes).

Whatever Leise's provenance, new mini-album 'Lingua Franca' heads out on a global tour for its influences, taking in gamelan, Afrobeats, Latin tempos and hazy Balearica. Intricate, gossamer beats tickle each track like butterfly kisses.

If the job of songs such as the dub sax and tabla-strewn sundowner 'Leaving Llucmajor' or the somnambulant chime of 'El Modelo' is to evoke a time and a place – of lazy, late summer evenings – then they score a direct hit.
