Close Eyes To Exit
Kurtis Hairston set out his stall with his 2012 album 'The Dread Of An Unknown Evil' – but its outstanding production and intense song structures couldn't differentiate it from other James Blake-ish post-dubstep of the time.
This time round, though, Hairston has smashed any doubts. Even though you can hear hip hop, dub and electronica here, this LP is nothing but itself: it's an exquisite distillation of fury and sorrow at a chaotic world, and it manages to both be as futuristic as hell and look back to pre-digital studio experiments like David Bowie's 'Low' in its collages and abstractions.
This is genuinely experimental music that anyone should be able to appreciate instantly – and it's basically a masterpiece.
