J Hus, Stormzy and Sampha have all been nominated for the Mercury Prize 2017

Loyle Corner and The xx are also in the running for the prestigious award

The shortlist for the 2017 Hyundai Mercury Prize is here, and J Hus, Stormzy and Sampha (pictured) have all received nods for the prestigious award.

Nominated for ‘Gang Signs & Prayer’, ‘Common Sense’ and ‘Process’ respectively, the artists are joined by chart-toppers Ed Sheeran, The xx and Blossoms.

Selected by an independent panel of judges, the Hyundai Mercury Prize for Album of the Year acknowledges and celebrates the best the UK music scene has to offer.

In a statement, organisers explained: “What these artists have in common is an infectious pleasure in music making and an arresting sense of urgency about the music they make. They delight in exploring musical possibilities and refusing to be pinned down by genre conventions.”

After news of the nominations broke, The xx, J Hus, Stormzy and Sampha all took to Twitter to express their excitement.
