Germany’s far-right party AfD wants to terminate Berghain’s license
A formal request has been submitted to the district council
Alternative for Germany, or AfD, has submitted a formal request to the district office of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg area of Berlin for Berghain’s current trade license to be withdrawn.
The letter from the far-right political party cites rampant drug use, sexually transmitted infections occurring inside the club and the death of an American tourist who overdosed at the club last year to support its application, labelling Berghain an “irresponsible and dangerous business”.
It also calls for club opening hours to be limited to 10pm to 6am in order to limit drug use and align more closely with natural sleeping patterns, and Berghain’s dark rooms to be lit up to prevent sexual acts.
Maximilian Schirmer, a district council representative of The Left Party, called attention to the letter on Twitter, posting a screenshot of the request.
A Twitter user also noted in response that the AfD representative and author of the letter Sibylle Schmidt is involved in event management and theorised she may have ulterior motives in targeting the location. Schmidt is no stranger to the Berlin club scene, having run the Blockshock spot in the 80s and in the mid-90s founding Tanzschule Schmidt.
