German techno artist Alma Marter has died aged 32

The DJ and producer was diagnosed with cancer before her death

Leipzig-based DJ and producer Alma Marter, real name Stefanie Merten, has passed away after losing her battle with cancer.

Merten was diagnosed with glioblastoma before her death on Tuesday, September 12, an aggressive type of cancer that grows on the brain. She was just 32 years old.

Announcing the news on Instagram on Wednesday, Merten’s family wrote: “Today you fell asleep peacefully & after a long, honourable battle. Your time in this world was too short, but you made it a better and more beautiful place for us.”

“You were, are & remain such a wonderful daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, great love, friend & musician. With your smile you infected the people around you, with your selfless and loving nature you gave hope and encouraged them.”

During her career, Alma Marter played alongside her brother under the duo moniker Alma & August Lilienweiss, and produced several techno records for Berlin-based label Sonderling.

Merten made her HÖR debut in September 2020 and began picking up shows at renowned Berlin clubs Sisyphos and Club OST before her death. She was also a resident at Leipzig-based club night and record label, Sanity.

“With your sensitivity and talent you have taken so many people on musical journeys,” her family added in a statement on Wednesday.

“Everywhere you were there was so much love & lightness. No words can describe how much we love, appreciate & miss you. We take you with us on every path we take - with eternal love & gratitude.”
