Forest Drive West - 7/10

'System/Show Them'

Who would have thought, back in the halcyon days of dubstep, that Peverelist would be the producer to really roll with the punches (geddit?) and come out of the genre leading the next micro-mutation?

Nobody’s come up with a better name for it than ‘UK bass’, but Pev’s Livity Sound label has managed the transition towards techno exceptionally gracefully, and the same is true for Livity sub-label Dnuos Ytivil.

With that as the backdrop for Forest Drive West (all we’ve been told about the artist(s) is that they’re from London), this two-track debut doesn’t feel like the work of a novice. Over 10 and eight minutes long respectively, the tracks are subtle but bouncy, with punchy builds tinged with darkness and suspense.

Watch out for the heartbeat kick and bassline of ‘System’, and the sample made famous by minimalist composer Steve Reich in ‘Show Them’.
