Flying Lotus' debut feature film sparks walkout during Sundance premiere
“Kuso is the grossest movie ever made,” said a critic for The Verge
Flying Lotus’ debut feature film Kuso, which he described as influenced by “pretty much everything I'm afraid of”, premiered at Sundance last weekend and has caused controversy for the grotesque nature of its content.
The Verge headlined Chris Plante’s review with “Kuso is the grossest movie ever made,” detailing scenes of genital mutilation, mutant bodies, defecation, a giant cockroach emerging from George Clinton’s “hairy, wrinkled anus”, rape jokes, abortion gags, and much more besides.
Plante notes that “a large chunk of the audience left my screening early, when a boil-covered woman choked a man with a strap until he covered half her face with semen that looked like a muted version of Nickelodeon slime,” adding that a constant stream of walkouts continued until the curtain.
Flying Lotus has sinceresponded to these comments on Twitter, stating “It was only like 20 people out of like 400 who walked out. Wasn't as dramatic as they make it out to be. I tried to warn folks.”
There’s currently no release date set for Kuso, with no distributor having chosen to pick up the film yet, which has a soundtrack featuring new material from the likes of Aphex Twin, Thundercat, Flying Lotus and his rapper alias Captain Murphy.
