Floating Points shares new track ‘Silurian Blue’ as part of forthcoming short film

And reveals more about what inspired his Reflections – Mojave Desert project

Ahead of the release of his short film titled Reflections – Mojave Desert, Floating Points has shared the video for ‘Silurian Blue’, a new track from the project.

Shot when Sam Shepard and his band travelled to the Mojave Desert last summer, the material in the film possesses a similar sound profile to his latest album ‘Elaenia’, released in 2016, with a somewhat cosmic smooth jazz motif.

Shepard shared more about the project in a statement: “Whilst we were out playing and exploring the area around us – the sound reflecting from the rocks, the sound of the wind between them, complete stillness at night and packs of roaming coyotes in the distance, it became apparent that we could use this as its own unique recording environment”.

Reflections – Mojave Desert is a collaboration with director Anna Diaz Ortuño and is accompanied by a soundtrack consisting of five new tracks from Floating Points.

The spotlight on the Mojave Desert is the first in a string of Reflections short films. Shepard revealed why he was inspired to extend the project: “Through the process of making this record, we decided to start a series of musical & video explorations in interesting locations, where the music is a function of its surroundings… This first experiment only marks the beginning in this idea, and am currently seeking new interesting acoustic environments to explore”.
