Egyptian Lover in The Lab LA
A Thursday night special with the TR-808 master
The Lab Los Angeles is Mixmag and Smirnoff Sound Collective's weekly post-work unwind where we stream only the finest American and international DJs, live and direct from our Downtown LA office. This Thursday, we received Egyptian Lover in The Lab LA.
Greg Broussard is Egyptian Lover, Los Angeles's very own producer, DJ and vocalist that has played an essential part of the city's music scene since the early 80s. Flirting between hip-hop and electro in some of its earliest forms, Broussard's catalogue was built up through 12" singles released over the years that have eventually become part of his legacy.
As first a dancer - a club goer, true and true - later a DJ and finally the 'Master of' the Roland TR-808, Egyptian Lover went on to establish his own Egyptian Empire Records. In 2015, he released an album titled '1984', which served as a tip of the hat to his methods, rooted in analog and tradition in signature Egyptian Lover style.
Cocodisco joined us on opening duties on Thursday. As part of The Well collective and a DJ since 2010, Cocodisco's sound originated in the realm of disco and has since branched off to include house, tech house, deep house and - in her own words - "pure sex" for the dance floor.
The Lab LA is strongly powered by Void Acoustics. Subscribe to Mixmag TV and watch Egyptian Lover in The Lab LA on Mixmag's Facebook page or below.
