EDM gaining on country music's popularity in the US
Country's chart success in waning as EDM's soars
Arguably no genre of music is as identifiable with the US as country, with artists such as Garth Brooks and Toby Keith among the highest-earning celebrities in the world, according to Forbes.
Its chart success has been declining in recent years however, with the likes of pop, EDM and hip hop scoring much bigger hits. An outright country song hasn’t breached America’s Hot 100 since 2013 when Georgia Line’s ‘Cruise’ came in at number four.
Country influence is instead finding its way into other genres such as pop and EDM through artists such as Avicii, Andy Grammer and Taylor Swift, who have all had marked success with country-indebted hybrids such as ‘Honey I’m Good’ and ‘Wake Me Up’, the latter remaining in the Hot 100 for over a year.
Whether this marks the start of a permanent shift or just a momentary blip in country’s monolithic success remains to be seen.
